Chetan Kharod

Lt Col Chetan U. Kharod, USAF, MC, FS

Lt Col Chetan U. Kharod is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Military & Emergency Medicine. He is the Course Director for the required 4th year Emergency Medicine Clerkship. He serves on the Student Promotion Committee, is the faculty advisor for the Emergency Medicine and the Wilderness Medicine Interest Groups, and serves as a mentor to a number of undergraduate medical students. Dr Kharod is also a special consultant for international and civil-military medical operations to the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine.
 
Lt Col Kharod is a graduate of USUHS Class of 1996. After graduation, Dr. Kharod completed a transitional internship at Malcolm Grow Medical Center (Andrews AFB). He was subsequently an SME flight surgeon in the Air Combat Command and deployed worldwide in support of the AF mission. From 1999-2002, Dr Kharod was an Emergency Medicine resident at SAUSHEC (BAMC/WHMC, Texas) where he also served as Chief Resident in 2001-2002.
 
After residency, Dr Kharod served as an emergency medicine faculty physician for the Emergency Medicine Residency at SAUSHEC and deployed to OEF as a Critical Care Air Transport Team Leader. He completed an International Emergency Medicine Fellowship and a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins before coming to USUHS.
 
Lt Col Kharod has attended, among others, the Aerospace Medicine Primary Course, Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation Course, the GSACEP ED Director's Course, Global Medicine, and the Critical Care Air Transport Team course. His international background includes multiple military field and combat deployments in 10 countries on 3 continents and humanitarian/EM education in over 20 countries including Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, China, India, and Malaysia. His research interests include tactical combat care, civil-military medical operations training, combat stress resistance, military pre-hospital capacities, emergency medicine curriculum development, and disaster medicine.
 
He is an Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor and CME Editor for the Journal of Special Operations Medicine. Lt Col Kharod's primary goal is to develop a state-of-the-art EM clerkship, to increase executive awareness of the operational and strategic importance of EM in medical education and beyond, to inculcate a sense of values-based practice in the medical students at USU, and to accomplish research of military relevance.
