The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences was established by Congress in 1972 under the Department of Defense. The purpose of the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine is to provide the Nation with physicians dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the United States Public Health Service.
A commitment to serve the Nation as a physician in one of the uniformed services must be foremost in an applicant's reason for coming to this school. The Medical School's excellent faculty is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous scientific and clinical education. Graduates are well prepared to enter postgraduate training that will complete their preparation as physicians ready to practice medicine as members of the uniformed services health care system.
While enhancing each individual's humanism, the medical school provides students with the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary to become competent and compassionate physicians. Emphasis in the curriculum of military medicine, preventive medicine, tropical medicine, survival in harsh environments, and disaster medicine uniquely prepares graduates to meet the challenges which confront the uniformed services. We are very proud of our graduates' contributions to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
In a world that is undergoing rapid, sometimes unimagined change, our graduates have been prepared to serve the common good as uniformed physicians. They are prepared for the opportunities and challenges that medical practice will pose now and in future years. There will be significant advances in technology which may revolutionize medical education, health maintenance, and patient care. Major changes in the composition of patient populations, disease entities, and in the organizational and delivery of health care are on the horizon. The faculty of the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine is committed to remaining at the forefront of these changes to ensure that our goals of academic excellence, scientific rigor, humanism, and professionalism are met.
