Wireless Accounts
Welcome to the USU Wireless Network. This government network may be used by students, guests, and members of the USU community. Customers must keep in mind that the wireless network is an unclassified, government network and should not be used to transmit sensitive information. At present, the wireless network can be accessed in the following public areas (Library, Student Lounge, and Cafeteria).
Wireless accounts only provide the user with access to the internet and email. USU network drives, printers and other resources CANNOT be accessed when connected wirelessly.
Standard User Accounts and Wireless Access
Wireless accounts are already available with all Standard User Accounts.
Guest Accounts for Wireless Access
- 1. Sponsor should fill out a Help Desk Work Request (Heat Self Service) to include email account
- 2. Need to include guest's name, start and ending date on the work request
- 3. An email will be sent to the sponsor with guest's info. The sponsor is responsible for giving the information to the guest

What services are available?
While connected to the Wireless Network you can browse the internet and read e-mail with the speed of 11 to 54 mbps depending on your wireless network card. A Wireless connection can be made within 50 to 300 feet unimpeded.
Where are wireless network connections located?
- Wireless network connections are located in the following public areas:
- Student Lounge – The Student Lounge is located in building "C" outside of Student Affairs
- Cafeteria – The Cafeteria is located on the first floor of building "B" next to the Sanford Auditorium
- Learning Research Center (LRC) – The LRC is located on the north end of building "C"
- Helpdesk – The Helpdesk is located on the ground floor of building "A" in room G047.
What devices will be supported on the wireless network?
Government owned mobile devices such as laptops, PC tablets and some PDAs that meet the 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards are supported. Devices that utilize the 802.17 standard such as Bluetooth are not currently supported. Will there be wireless printing?
Not presently, but in the future wireless printing will be available at the LRC.
What Operating Systems are supported?
The operating systems supported for Laptops are Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac O/S 10 or greater and for PDAs; Palm OS, Windows CE, etc. Note: Bluetooth devices are not support.
What are the Wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) requirements?
Wireless NICs must be Wi-Fi certified and 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g compliant. To verify the compliance of your card, visit the following web site.

How are the mobile devices connected to the wireless network?
Mobile devices can connect to the wireless network in public areas mentioned above. Once your mobile device locates a wireless network, it will be automatically connected. Customers may begin using the internet or e-mail. If you cannot connect to the network, please refer to the Mobile Device Setup instructions.
Who should setup and configure mobile devices?
Customers utilizing their personal mobile devices are responsible for setting up and configuring their connection. The Helpdesk will assist with the setup and configuration of government owned mobile devices. Instructions for setting up your mobile device are available at the Helpdesk Home Page and the Helpdesk. What security concerns should customers have, if any?
Customers utilizing personally owned mobile devices are reminded to keep their devices up-to-date with anti-virus definitions and Windows Security Updates.
Customers shall follow security policies that govern the use of this network. The following activities are prohibited:
- Transmit sensitive information (i.e., personal, HIPAA, etc.)
- Activities for personal or commercial gain
- Storing or displaying sexually harassing or obscene language or material
- Storing or processing classified information
- Improperly storing or processing copyrighted material
- Viewing, changing or deleting files of another user without appropriate authorization or permission
- Attempting to defeat security systems
- Obtaining, installing, copy or using software in violation of the license agreement of the vendor (Note: This includes unauthorized music and movie downloads)
- Storing or displaying offensive material, such as racist literature
- Customers are required to report any information systems security incidents to the Information Systems Security Officer via the Helpdesk.
