National Honors for GSN Program Director
Linda Wanzer, MSN, RN, DNP, CNOR, was selected to receive the 2012 Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) National Award of Excellence in Perioperative
Nursing. This award is the highest honor bestowed by AORN and is awarded once a year to one deserving recipient.
USU celebrates nurse practitioners
USU recognized the more than 225 nurse practitioner alumni and the nurse practitioner field as a whole with the traditional cake and celebration during National Nurse Practitioner Week, Nov. 13-19. Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses who are able to assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe medications to their patients.

USU ranked at the top for gains in federal funding for science
The National Science Foundation recently ranked the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) at the top in the nation for the greatest increase in federal research funding. USU faculty and staff were responsible for an 893.9 percent jump over a 10-year period for schools with research and development in science and engineering.

Dean Hinshaw achieves Academy of Nursing 'Legend' status
USU Graduate School of Nursing Dean Ada Sue Hinshaw, RN, Ph.D., has been selected as a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). Dr. Hinshaw will be formally inducted on October 15, 2011 at the AAN's 38th Annual Meeting and Conference in Washington, DC.

USU faculty takes first place in Navy Wide Research Competition
Several Graduate School of Nursing faculty members and students were honored during the 26th Annual Navy-Wide Research Competition held on May 26 at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP).
CDR Greg Nezat, USU's former research director at NMCP, and CDR Chris Oudekerk, USU's current research director at NMCP, represented the winning team in the Navy Medicine East competition.
Their presentation, "The effect of intraoperative intravenous lidocaine infusion on the reduction of postoperative pain and return of bowel function in patients undergoing minor laparoscopic gynecological procedures," was supported by USU teammates LT Philip Grady, LCDRs Nathaniel Clark and John Lenahan, CDR Robert Hawkins and CAPT (Ret) Joe Pelligrini.
