Family Medicine Interest Group
The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at USU is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to experience the full spectrum of Family Medicine. The FMIG is integrally involved in activities serving the university, uniformed service members, their dependents and the local community. Our Mission Statement is "To promote the education, career development and community service opportunities for uniformed medical students interested in family medicine". Our motto is "Passion to the People!".
One of the largest student-run activities at USU, the FMIG was honored by the American Academy of Family Physicians as a 2001 Program of Excellence. FMIG events are open to the entire student body--come as you are able!

Community Service
- 1. TarWars/KickButts. The FMIG coordinates an annual anti-tobacco campaign in local elementary schools. Teams of medical students visit local classrooms to provide a message discouraging youth from using tobacco products.

- 2.Get Up, Get Out, Get Fit. The FMIG coordinates an annual fitness and health campaign in local elementary schools. Teams of medical students visit local classrooms to provide a message encouraging youths to make healthy choices regarding fitness and dietary choices.

- 3. Race Day Coverage: The FMIG combines real world medical experience with local community service by providing coverage to participants of the Marine Corps Marathon, the Army Ten-Miler, and the Avon Walk.

2Lt Elizabeth Marx at elizabeth.marx@usuhs.mil - 4. Sports Medicine Interest Group. The Family Medicine Interest group supports lectures, workshops and activities specifically related to sports medicine. Highlights for the group have included Joint Injection Workshops, Casting Workshops and shadowing Sports Medicine Physicians on the sidelines of live sporting events.

- 5. House Calls: Need a break from the grind of constant memorization? Want a glimpse of your diagnostic future? Are you ready to match wits with the indomitable (and more than a bit cranky) Dr. House? Then come have lunch with us as we watch an episode of House and dissect the case together.

- 6. Clinical shadowing: Would you like to see what the day-to-day life of a family physician is like? Follow our faculty in the clinic, on the labor deck, and on the inpatient ward!

- 7. Serving the underserved: Would you like to roll up your sleeves and pitch in? Want to make a difference in the life of a patient? Then how about shadowing one of the faculty at one of the local clinics for the underserved--be prepared, this is a life-changing experience!

Once a month we get together at a local faculty members home and discuss books about deployment and humanitarian medicine. Share deployment stories (or hear some new ones!) with your friends in an intimate away from school setting.

- 9. Speakers Bureau: Ready for the big picture view? How about the view from the front? Our speakers bureau brings in a wide variety of guests to discuss a diverse selection of topics of interest to FMIG members and the larger student body. Past speakers have included the Air Force Surgeon General and the AAFP Humanitarian Physician of the Year.
