The ultimate goal of the World-Class Academic Health Center in the National Capital Region is to provide expert clinical care, state-of-the-art clinical and basic science research, and exceptional medical education. Our deserving beneficiaries of the uniformed services experience a unique depth and breadth of clinical services in the National Capital Region. Since our beneficiaries have a choice in which system to receive health care, we strive to attain the steadfast confidence of our patients, so that they will choose to receive care within the Military Health System.

The Academic Health Center promotes a culture that supports success; success for the patient and success for its staff. To better serve our patients utilizing all resources available within all of the military Services, we
believe in a culture of service, focusing on the patient, utilizing the strengths of all military Services.
The Academic Health Center stands as the referral and tertiary care hub of an integrated health delivery system encompassing the entire National Capital Region. It stands as the definitive care referral center for more
than 35 medical treatment facilities across all military services.
The Academic Health Center creates an environment of inquiry and discovery. Our scholars conduct research that spans the basic science disciplines to clinical translational research. These breakthroughs, ultimately improving
medical outcomes, allow our patients the opportunity to participate, contribute, and benefit from exciting healthcare advances.
The Academic Health Center leads the nation in providing undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate medical education, advanced-practice graduate nursing education, and numerous health profession education programs for the
allied professions. The Academic Health Center includes the Uniformed Services University, the nation's military medical school having trained 25% of the physicians currently on active duty. It also includes the National
Capital Consortium, encompassing over 700 trainees in 67 residencies and fellowships. Together, these assets develop the next generation of uniformed healthcare providers, in peacetime and war, in order to ensure maintaining and restoring service members and their beneficiaries to optimal health, functionality, and quality of life.
The Academic Health Center "constantly envisions what could be and goes beyond the best known medical practice to advance the frontiers of knowledge and pioneer improved processes of care so that the extraordinary becomes
ordinary and the exceptional routine." (Defense Health Board, National Capital Region, Base Closure and Realignment, Health System Advisory Subcommittee, May 2009)
